Adaptogens – what does it mean?
Nikolai Lazarev, a Russian scientist, conducted research on plant substances in the first half of the 20th century. He found that certain natural raw materials cause an increase in the organism’s resistance to harmful external factors. He gave these substances a name: adaptogens.
Adaptogenic plants have a normalizing effect on the human body. This means that they help to balance certain processes without causing overstimulation. They calm the signs of overreactivity in the skin, for example, but do not block natural functions of the body.
Adaptogens can include plants such as:
- ginseng,
- mountain rhodiola,
- Chinese citronella.
Effect of adaptogens
It is likely that the plants’ antioxidant properties are responsible for their adaptogenic effects. Adaptogens:
- stimulate the immune system;
- support memory processes;
- improve concentration;
- improve mood and overall well-being.
Adaptogens are also used in cosmetics and cosmetology. They improve the condition of sensitive skin, vascular skin and reactive skin. They also work well as a skin care support for rosacea therapy. Cosmetics with adaptogens restore balance to vascular skin, improve skin tone and rebuild the hydrolipid barrier.
Adaptogens vs rosacea and erythema
An undoubted advantage of cosmetics with adaptogens is that such products prevent the dilatation of blood vessels on the face. This reduces the reactivity of sensitive skin to external and internal factors, manifested, among other things, by erythema (redness).
There are three phases of skin reactivity. The third phase, with persistent erythema and telangiectasias, can lead to rosacea. In this context, care with adaptogens plays a dual role. It is both a preventive measure for vascular skin and a supportive therapy for skin with already developed rosacea.
Acne rosacea is a chronic skin disease. For many people – both women and men – it becomes a real challenge. Adaptogens make it possible to significantly calm the symptoms of rosacea and restore the skin’s condition. A particularly effective adaptogen is Chinese citronella (Schisandra chinensis) – the main active ingredient of the rossatore line.
Chinese citronella – a solution for facial erythema
The effect of Chinese citronella on reducing facial erythema was confirmed by clinical studies. 60 women with an average age of 36 years applied a cream with 0.5% Chinese citronella twice a day. The test was double-blind and lasted 56 days.
The results of the study were unequivocally positive. Up to 83% of applicators experienced a decrease in the frequency of erythema appearance. As many as 76% confirmed that the intensity of skin redness was reduced.
Reduction of erythema, in fact, is not the only action of Chinese citronella. The ingredient shows a number of properties beneficial for sensitive vascular skin and for skin with rosacea.
Properties of Chinese citronella
Chinese citron is also known as wu-wei-zi or the fruit of five flavors. The plant contains schizandrin, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin P and minerals. The use of Chinese citronella has many benefits for the body, especially – for the skin:
- is a powerful anti-inflammatory agent;
- reduces redness of the skin;
- improves and evens out skin tone;
- results in increased elasticity of protein fibers;
- prevents blockage of the sebaceous glands’ mouths;
- strongly nourishes the skin.
How to use adaptogens?
Adaptogens are worth using as part of your daily home care routine. Such a routine should be complemented by a non-invasive treatment based on adaptogens performed by a cosmetologist. Comprehensive care brings visible results in the fight against the problem of redness, hyper-reactivity, dilated blood vessels and telangiectasia.
