Hair podding – what does it mean?
We speak of podding when hair clumps together in such a way that it forms larger strands. Then they look unwashed, they’re flabby. They do not present themselves as well as we would like them to. Stranding is most troublesome with low-porous hair.
In order to properly take care of hair with a tendency to frizz, it’s a good idea to first understand the source of the problem.
Causes of hair podding
We usually think that the cause of pods is oily hair. This may indeed be the case, but it is only one of the reasons. Hair tends to pod if its surface is uneven. Therefore, the sources of the problem may lie much deeper. Much depends on our habits in daily hair care.
Let’s list the basic mistakes, that can lead to podding.
- Poor hair washing technique.
- Inaccurate rinsing of shampoo or other cosmetics.
- Use of cosmetics that overload the hair.
- Too many silicones.
- PEH imbalance. Strictness can indicate too little protein or humectant or too much emollient.
- Frequent touching of hair, playing with it, combing it with fingers.
- Improper drying and combing.
How to deal with pods? Rules of care
What to do when the hair pods? First of all, we should wash them properly and analyze the composition of cosmetics. The basis of hair care is to take care of the needs of the scalp.
Proper hair washing
What does proper hair washing mean? Shampoo is mixed with water and foamed. For this we can use a box, a bottle, or even a jar. We apply such a mixture to the scalp. Gently massage. Do not tug on the hair or lather it. Massage only the scalp, not the tips. The flowing foam of the shampoo will cleanse the hair all over. Leave the shampoo for 1-2 minutes. The last step is to rinse the shampoo thoroughly. Now gently comb the hair and apply conditioner.
Selection of cosmetics
It is worth analyzing the composition of hair products. If you find that shampoo, conditioner, serum and mist contain silicones, replace some of them with silicone-free products. Too many silicones make the hair sticky, and therefore podgy.
It is also good to verify the composition of cosmetics for PEH. It’s all about the right proportions of proteins, humectants and emollients.
- Proteins include, for example, hydrolyzed keratin, milk protein, wheat protein, soy protein, silk, elastin, egg yolk, collagen.
- Humectants include aloe vera, honey, sucrose, fructose, glycerin, urea, hyaluronic acid, panthenol, lactic acid, niacinamide.
- Emollients are mainly oils, butters, vegetable, animal, synthetic waxes – for example, coconut oil, jojoba oil, macadamia oil, shea butter, argan oil.
- Silicones – their names very often end in cone, conol. Na przykład dimetikon cetylowy, metikon stearylowy, dimetikonol, dimetikon PEG-12, amodimetikon PEG-7.
Drying and combing
If you use a hair dryer after washing your head, set a lukewarm air stream. This will give your hair more shine and reduce damage to its structure. Before you start combing, choose a brush or comb according to your hair type. Podding is promoted by using combs with a wide tooth spacing.
Let’s also pay attention to weather conditions. If the weather is rainy and windy, think about a hairstyle with an updo.
Proper care will not only free us from the problem of pods, but also ensure beautiful, healthy hair. So it is worthwhile to consciously choose cosmetics and use appropriate washing techniques. A good shampoo isn’t everything! Let’s take a critical approach to our hair care habits. Let’s take care of what our hair needs most.
